Why Plan a 19-Inch Rack First?
The 19-inch rack is the shared standard for servers, switches, and UPS units (EIA-310: 482.6 mm across the mounting ears, 450.85 mm inner rail opening, 44.45 mm per 1U). The width is the same everywhere, but depth is not: a full-depth server can outgrow a shallow cabinet, so it pays to check the fit before you buy.
The planner checks every component against the rail opening, the usable depth of the rack, the free U height, and the PoE budget. Smaller gear can go on a shelf or a 3D-printed mount.
